About Us - Smeaton Vets
Palliative Care & Home Euthanasia

Smeaton Vets is a family-run business based in Clarkston, providing mobile palliative care and home euthanasia. We want to bring something different to the way we treat our pets, especially in their old age.

Founded by passionate animal lovers, Smeaton Vets was born out of a deep commitment to the well-being of pets. We understand that life can get busy, and visiting a traditional veterinary clinic may not always be easy. That’s why we decided to bring veterinary care, in the form of mobile palliative care directly to your home, making it more convenient and less stressful for you and especially your pets.

Dr. Onneile Smeaton is our vet and she graduated from the Glasgow University in 2012. She has worked both in the United Kingdom and abroad. Her main veterinary interests are dealing with geriatric patients and pain management. Dr. Onneile has gained a broad range of experience from working in charity as well as private clinics in and around Glasgow.

At Smeaton Vets, we are dedicated to providing top-notch mobile palliative veterinary care for your beloved pets right at your doorstep. Our approach is to make pet healthcare convenient, stress-free, and accessible for both you and your furry family members.

Dr Onneile Smeaton grew up in a semi rural area of Botswana, where she first discovered her love for animals.

“I can still clearly remember beginning every morning at the farm by drinking fresh groats milk.”

Studying in Glasgow was quite the shock to begin with for Dr Onneile, as she initially thought she would be studying in the Caribbean, but as fate would have it, she ended up at Glasgow University… This is a story she can tell you more about, when she is at one of her home visits, looking after your pet.

Her passion was to be a farm vet, little did she know that the Scottish winter was going to quickly change her mind. “I remember one January morning when we were at a farm in the West Coast of Scotland for TB testing. My hands were frozen, and I was soaking in the rain. The farmer very kindly suggested that I should put my hands somewhere behind the cow to keep warm. A story for another day though…”

After 10 years of working in veterinary roles, both in charity organisations and in the private sector, Dr Onneile has seen both interesting cases and challenging roles. When asked what the most rewarding part of her role as a vet is, her answer is simply: “seeing once ill pets going home, healed, and happy.”

Dr Onneile founded Smeaton Vets after witnessing one too many older pets struggling to get up onto the consultation tables, either due to fear, anxiety or from aches and pains that come with age. This was especially true for dogs. She knew that providing  palliative care in their homes, would have a positive impact on both pets and their owners.

“My aim has always been to provide a stress free service to both pets and owners. I look forward to meeting and serving pets in Glasgow. And hopefully, in the not so distant future, be able to offer the same service to most parts of Scotland.”
